All digital images will be judged at a resolution of 1400 x 1050 pixels. The 1400 is the width across, making the image a landscape format. Firstly, you should resize your image to fit within that pixel area. You will probably want to maintain the proportions of your image, so you may choose to add a background to fill any remaining space if you wish. There are various ways of resizing images for digital projection:
Using the Crop Tool:
1. Select crop tool on your tool bar, and in the options set the width to 1400 pixels (type in px) and the height to 1050 pixels (type in px). Resolution should not matter but different Salons or Exhibititions may have different requirements so check with them before resizing.
2. Open your image, apply the cropping tool. The dimensions will be fixed no matter where you move the tool. If the image does not fit the dimensions, and if the image is a portrait, then delete the 1400 px width option. If the image is more a letterbox format, then delete the 1050 px height option. Save image as a JPEG - see below.
Using the resize option in Photoshop/Elements:
1. From the Image menu, choose Image Size, the Image Size dialog box is displayed
2. Make sure the units you have selected are pixels (top centre of the box).
3. Enter the width you want, for example 1400. The height will adjust automatically providing you have the Constrain Proportions box ticked.
4. Finally, check the height, if the height is more than 1050, then you need to enter 1050 in the height - this will reduce the width to less than 1400 pixels. Click OK.
Saving your Image:
1. To save a file as a JPEG file, from the File menu, choose Save As. The Save As dialog is displayed.
2. Select the folder you want to save to. Type in the correct File name - remember, it must show your image number followed by a space then your title. This title will appear on the screen when projected for the competition. Next, set Format field to JPEG.
3. Click the Save button, you'll then see the JPEG Options dialog box.
4. Set to highest quality 12. Make sure the Format Options is set to Baseline (“Standard”).
5. Click OK.
